Frequently asked questions
What is Witness to War & Violence?
Witness to War & Violence (W2W&V) is a national telephone support service for people affected by distress, conflict, and difficult experiences.
We recognise that the impact of war and global crises does not stay overseas. It continues to affect people here in Australia through worry, fear, and ongoing stress. At the same time, serious events within Australia can also impact people’s sense of safety and well-being.
What kind of support do you provide?
W2W&V provides a safe and respectful space where people can talk openly, without judgment. Our team includes bicultural workers, counsellors, and trained support staff who understand the emotional and cultural realities people carry. Many speak multiple languages and bring a lived understanding of the communities they support.
This is a place to talk, be heard, and feel supported when things don’t feel right.
Is this service free?
Yes, it’s completely free and confidential. This is a place to talk, be heard, and feel supported when things don’t feel right.
What happens when I call?
When you contact W2W&V, you’ll speak with a trained team member who will listen without judgment.
You can share as much or as little as you feel comfortable with; there is no pressure to explain everything or have the right words.
Our role is to support you in the moment, to listen, help you make sense of what you’re feeling, and, if needed, guide you towards further support.
While we are not a case management service, we can stay connected with you until you feel supported and linked to the right help.
What if I speak another language?
We can talk to you in in multiple languages, including Arabic, Farsi (Persian), Dari, Ukrainian, Hebrew, and English, and in other languages with an interpreter.
Do I have to identify as a refugee or survivor of war?
No, you don’t need to identify as a refugee or survivor of war.
Our support line is for anyone affected by overseas conflict. This includes people with family or loved ones impacted, those with lived experience of war or displacement, and communities in Australia with cultural or personal ties to conflict-affected regions. It also includes individuals experiencing distress related to ongoing news or social media coverage, as well as people affected by serious incidents within Australia.
The service is open to anyone living in Australia, no referral or eligibility requirements.
What information do I need to provide?
You can share as much or as little as you feel comfortable with. Your call is confidential and safe, and we respect your privacy and your story.
Do you take donations?
We do.
